Even though Oil boilers using Kerosene or Heating Oil provide the safest and cheapest form of heating in the UK, and is readily available, with no plans to stop its use in the near future, its use is frowned upon by environmentalists and people who demand zero emmision heating such as heatpumps, regardless of whether you will be able to afford to install them or use them afterwards. The same people who demand zero emmisions transport and zero emmisions production of electricity but seem oblivious to the levels of pollution created while manufacturing the massive amounts of concrete needed for wind turbine bases and while mining for Lithium to manfacture batteries for electric vehicles.
A 200 metre wind turbine under construction in Scotland by Bute Energy required a 750 cubic meter concrete foundation, thats around 1875 tonnes of concrete, producing 1 tonne of concrete releases approx. 0.2 to 0.5 tonnes (200 to 500 kg) of CO2. This doesn't include hard standing for cranes, battery storage or roads and der their proposals the foundations will remain in the ground after the wind turbines are dismantled in 40 years (or less).
Transitioning from oil heating to a renewable liquid fuel such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) only requires a minor modification to your boiler and needs a tank in good condition. Conversion could be completed by a technician during a routine service and is expected to cost less than £500. You keep your boiler, radiators, heating controls and everything else. It’s straightforward and hassle free. You keep all the benefits of heating oil from instant heat, shopping around for the best price to purchasing the fuel when you want to. The liquid fuel industry is well established with experienced technicians and fuel distributors across the country who will maintain the high safety standards we all expect.
The Future Ready Fuel Campaign is an initiative for homes and businesses that use Heating Oil to transition from the use of Fossil Fuels to the use of LOW CARBON, FOSSIL FREE, RENEWABLE LIQUID FUELS such as HVO, which would give an IMMEDIATE REDUCTION IN CARBON EMMISIONS BY NEARLY 90% and prevent the unneccessary and expensive installation of a Heatpump.
Even if you are a hardened Eco warrior, there's no need to replace your Oil boiler with an expensive Air Source Heat Pump. An Oil fired boiler can be easily and cheaply converted to use HVO which is a LOW CARBON, FOSSIL FREE, RENEWABLE LIQUID FUEL which would give an immediate REDUCTION OF CARBON EMMISIONS BY NEARLY 90%.
Different energy sources are measured in different units: kWh, therms, BTU, cubic metres, litres and more. This makes it very difficult to compare the actual costs for powering a heating system between different energy sources.
In order to make a fair comparison standardised units are needed to determine costs. Nottingham Energy Partnership have made these calculations for the main fuel types. In making these calculations, sources of data and assumptions have been used and referenced.
Average prices shown are based on the supply of fuel for a medium-sized domestic property (around 12,500 kWh of annual heat demand per year). Quotes are taken from suppliers within the East Midlands region. Standing charges are included in the kWh price.
Nottingham Energy Partnership are a climate change and fuel poverty charity providing home improvement measures to improve the energy efficiencies of homes through Nottinghamshire, but their website is full of information that can be used in any area of the United Kingdom.
Below is a link to Compartive Fuel costs of all fuels on the Nottingham Energy Partnership website. Scroll down to see the Monthly Comparative Fuel Costs. They are based on the average monthly price of fuel, and calculated in pence per KW/h (Kilowatt/hour) taking into consideration the efficiency of the appliance. This gives a true cost comparison that can easily be compared between different fuels and technologies.
